MOA of Febuxostat

Gout occurs when high levels of serum uric Acid build up in body, which can then form needle-shaped crystals in and around the joint causing Swelling and Pain in the joints.

MODE Of ACTION

  • Febuxostat is a non-purine xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to treat gout.
  • It works by non-competitively blocking the molybdenum pterin center, which is the active site of xanthine oxidase, which catalyzes the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid
  • By inhibiting xanthine oxidase, febuxostat reduces the production of uric acid, which helps to lower serum uric acid levels and prevent the formation of gout crystals.

Specifically, febuxostat, a non-purine XOI, has been shown to be more effective than allopurinol at lowering serum uric acid levels in patients with gout, it have fewer side effects as it does not interfere with the metabolism of other purines.
